Tacos + Shave Ice: Naugles And Haole Boys Opening New Beach Concession

Tacos + Shave Ice: Naugles And Haole Boys Opening New Beach Concession

This Memorial Day weekend promises to be exceptionally memorable for Huntington Beach, first with Bolsa Chica's new gourmet beach concessions opening on Saturday, May 28, and then the delicious announcement that Naugles and Haole Boys are unveiling a new beach concession in front of the Hilton's Waterfront Beach Resort that very same day. It's the summer of revamped seasonal beach concessions, and our bibs are ready.

After a successful run from the 1970s through the mid-1990s, Naugles, a Southern California-born fast-food Mexican chain launched by Dick Naugle, found itself swallowed up by a Del Taco merger. It lay dormant for more than two decades until it re-emerged in Fountain Valley in July 2015—thanks to the efforts of Huntington Beach's own Christian Ziebarth, who appropriately blogs about Mexican food. Open only on the weekends, the reprised corporate test kitchen delighted Naugles cult followers with its simple, highly addictive menu of bean and cheese burritos, hard and soft-shelled tacos, bean and cheese cups, and more.

Chatter of expansion has echoed through town for months, and Naugles finally unleashed the details this week. Taking over the former Wahoo's Fish Taco beach concession at 21351 Pacific Coast Highway, the beloved chain will serve up its usual fare, including red and green sauce tacos and burritos—and generous helpings of nostalgia.

The cherry on top is Haole Boys, a Southern California-based shave ice truck with a kiosk in downtown HB, which will share the space alongside Naugles. Says Haole Boys Owner Jimmy Anderson, "Haole Boys Shave Ice is proud and excited to partner with Naugles Tacos and the Waterfront Hilton to bring this new adventure to Huntington Beach!"

Both will operate daily during the summer months, and Naugles expects to remain open daily through October, then possibly remain open on weekends until the following summer season.

As a little extra sugar on top, OC Register shares that validation is available at The Waterfront.

Naugles hours: Sunday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Haole Boys hours: Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

As you bite into an epic Naugles Bun Taco, remember Dick's motto:

Prepare food fresh.
Serve customers fast.
Keep place clean.
-Dick Naugle
