Huntington Beach Then & Now: Meat Loaf On The Pier In 1968

Huntington Beach Then & Now: Meat Loaf On The Pier In 1968

THEN // When I interviewed Meat Loaf a few years ago, I asked him about this photo, which was taken on the Huntington Beach Pier in 1968. He told me it was the very first promo picture taken for his first band, Meat Loaf Soul. In fact, his very first professional gig would be held later that night when Meat Loaf Soul opened for a band called Them, featuring Van Morrison. I wondered if the show had been at the Golden Bear, but he said no, it was at a place called the Cave, located on Ellis just off Beach. He said he remembered that picture like it was yesterday, and that he loved Huntington Beach.

NOW // Today, almost 50 years later, of course there's no sign or anything near the exact spot where the soon-to-be superstar once stood with his group. But that's okay. That's what this column is for.
