Photos: Salty Dogs Hang Paws At 2014 Surf City Surf Dog

The heat was on during the 6th Annual Surf City Surf Dog® competition on Sunday, September 28, at Huntington Dog Beach. Salty dogs took to the surf in six categories—Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, Tandem, and Shredder—to hang paws and raise money for six charities.

With 6-year SCSD MC Matt Determan and Rick "Rockin' Fig" Fignetti on the mic, plus a panel of notable surf judges, the event drew a crowd of both two- and four-legged spectators and crowned the following "surfurs" this year's canine champions:

1st // Kiehi (electric blue)

2nd // Surf Dog Joey (yellow)

3rd // Coppertone (red)

1st // Brandy (turquoise)

2nd // Butters (red)

3rd // Cherie (electric blue)

1st // Kalani (pink)

2nd // Bamboo (yellow)

3rd // Django (electric blue)

2nd // Hanzo and Kalani

3rd // Kiwi and Sugar

1st // Sugar (electric blue)

2nd // Haole (orange)

3rd // Abbie Girl (red)

Organized by Book That Event and hosted by Unleashed by Petco™, the contest welcomed competitors from not only the States, but also Canada and Brazil. New to SCSD, the "Shredder" category allowed all-star pups to switch out boards and shred on fiberglass boards in addition to the standard foam boards.

The two days leading up to the contest saw a "Yappy Hour" Red Carpet event and PAWabunga Costume Contest at the Shorebreak Hotel, as well as a Dog Surfing History Exhibit and the inaugural International Surf Dog Walk of Fame at the International Surfing Museum. Walk of Fame male Hanzo, Walk of Fame female Abbie, and Local Hero Sugar all sunk their paws into wet cement to make it official. Photos can be viewed on the SCSD Facebook and Instagram pages.

Huntington Beach artist and Museum Exhibits Director Dave C. Reynolds crafted the wooden event trophies by hand and also served as a judge alongside Kim "Danger Woman" Hamrock, Lauren Powers, Peter "PT" Townend, and Bob Pace. We can still hear the barks of the radical competitors, as well as those of Rockin' Fig, who apparently speaks dog.

Free dog treat samples flowed freely on Sunday, and our own Surf City Surf Dog raised his paw to the annual charitable community contest. This year's charity partners are Barks of Love, Huntington Dog Beach, French Bulldog Village, Southern California Bulldog Rescue, Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue, and Westie Rescue of Orange County & Beyond. A portion of the entry fees is donated to each group.

Bark and give on, SCSD!

Greetings From Greece!
