Huntington Beach Then & Now: 'Cheap Drinks' And 'Lousy Food'

THEN // They may have advertised "cheap drinks" and "lousy food" but Hungry Joe's also had a reputation for bringing in many a popular jazz act through most of the 1970s. The casual club also booked the occasional blues act, including Bonnie Raitt. But the haunt along PCH met a fiery end at the start of summer in 1977, when an arsonist set fire to it in the middle of the night.

NOW // Today near 15th Street and PCH, no sign of the club remains. Or that little oil well. The phone booth is gone, too, along with everything else. Too bad there isn't a little marker in the sidewalk. Who knows, there may just be some jazz fans in those homes today that might get a kick out of knowing what took place there.
