Why Zimzala's Bloody Mary Is One Of Huntington Beach's Best

We're suckers for a spicy, fully loaded Bloody Mary. If we spy one on a menu, we're ordering it. When we first plopped down on one of the orange cushioned sofas on Zimzala's outdoor patio, their Bloody waved at us from the list. After sipping one down and nibbling on the fixin's, we had to know what made it so perfectly tasty. So we asked, and we discovered just how epic their take on the classic cocktail really is.

Located at the Shorebreak Hotel, Zimzala serves up sophistication and creative cuisine to downtown Huntington Beach in a relaxed, surfer chic setting. Locals and tourists alike opt for the eatery along The Strand for its traditional yet elevated American bites and beverages—courtesy of Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson—and canines come for the dog-friendly patio and exclusive pooch menu. A couple years back, people also flocked to Zimzala for the Sunday Bloody Mary Bar.

Zimzala General Manager Ian McDermott tells us that Zimzala packed up the bar after the number of recipes hit 57. "With the kitchen we have an endless supply of stuff that we can make," says McDermott, adding that instead of asking bartenders to memorize nearly 60 Bloody Mary recipes, why not just give customers the freedom to request any concoction their hearts desire? That's exactly what they did.

Starting with a handcrafted, housemade base created and evolved by Veteran Bartender Dennis Reyes, Zimzala's Bloody Mary includes a few secret ingredients, one of which is Sriracha. The cocktail team also cracks the pepper by hand and whips up a special horseradish sauce. Then it's "You Call It" from there.

"We can make any kind of Bloody Mary you want," promises McDermott. "I have every type of different vodka you can possibly imagine." Imagine the possibilities... 

Whether it's a "meatastic" Bloody with strips of bacon and prosciutto, a shrimp cocktail Bloody or a funky salad Bloody, the skilled mixologists at Zimzala have done it. Says McDermott, "The bartenders know what they have at their disposal, so they can get creative." With ingredients like chipotle vodka, jalapeño-infused tequila, serrano-infused tequila and ghost chile pepper simple syrup, the tongue's the limit here, folks.

On Sundays, you can sit and sip a standard Bloody for just $7 all day long. Opt for the "You Call It" any day at any time, and you'll pay for the price of booze plus $2.
