Photos: Eco-Awesome RRR Surf Off Raises Money, Awareness, And The Bar For Beach Cleanups

The first annual Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Surf Off in Huntington Beach on Saturday, October 4, not only hosted an all-day surf competition at 9th and PCH, it also raised eco-awareness and funds for local environmental nonprofits. Waves reaching four to six feet rolled in for the contest, as did 472 volunteers for the Surfrider beach cleanup. Even Gus, a baby pig wrapped in a blanket, joined the fun.

Organized by Seth Matson, owner of Matson Graphics and Orange County Clothing Company, the nonprofit event benefits SurfriderBolsa Chica Land TrustShipley Nature CenterChildren's Hospital of Orange County, and Drains to Ocean. Money donated by competing surfers will be divided among the beneficiaries, as will funds raised from the Beachside Recycling drive during the event. Numbers are still being tallied, and we'll update our story once they're in.

Thanks to the hundreds of beach cleanup volunteers, a simultaneously impressive and embarrassing 455.34 pounds of rubbish was collected from our sands. Familiar offenders were plastics, styrofoam, and cigarette butts.

Here's the list of Saturday's winners, who took home reusable Surfrider bags stuffed with donated prizes and eco-trophies handmade by Matson using sterilized garbage found along the HB coastline.
