Dozens of dogs had their days today at Huntington Dog Beach during the fifth annual Surf City Surf Dog competition. Pooches of all sizes hit the water to compete for their very own Sony Action Cam Pet Packs and, of course, bragging rights. Only a few minor canine collisions occurred in the water as the pawticipants hanged 20, and the wipeouts were aplenty. With winning weather, dogumentary makers, a star panel, a pooch pun-producing host and a laid-back crowd, the event perfectly showcased all that is awesome about Surf City.
Split into four weight classes—extra large, large, medium and small—the furry contenders vied for the number one spot during 10 heats started and ended with the sound of an air horn. Host Matt Determan provided playful commentary on the action, keeping smiling spectators and the panel of judges abreast of successful rides, impressive spinners and hairy situations. Judges included Pete "PT" Townend, Lauren Powers, Bob Pace and Rick "Rockin' Fig" Fignetti.
Many favorites graced the lineup this year, including Sugar, the dog whose owner paddles true to the phrase "far out," and Louie, whose team wore "Team Louie" garb in support of their pooch. Dolphins swam up for a look at the dog eat dog strife, and for the first time in the event's five-year history, Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards donned their red suits and assisted the owners and their pups—some who switched their focus from the perfect wave to the perfect escape. The water was crowded to say the least, and proceeds from the event benefit several local charities.
