12 Best Halloween Costume Shops In Huntington Beach

Originally published in 2013, this guide has been upcycled for 2015.

The spookiest season of the year has arrived, and Halloween superfans have been dreaming up epic ensembles for months. Finding the perfect getup in Huntington Beach can be as simple as grabbing a packaged look from a seasonal store, or involve rummaging through thrift store racks to piece together a winning creation. Here are 12 of the best spots around town to score that scary, silly, and/or sexy Halloween costume.

1 Look Vintage (Photo courtesy of shop)

This charming vintage shop on 5th Street houses pieces perfect for hipster, rocker, cowboy/cowgirl, hippie, and retro 60s garb. Jean cut-offs and fringe abound, the eclectic collection also offers an assortment of leathers, furs, camo, ski vests, varsity jackets, a full rack of vintage 60s mod style dresses, and more. Accessories also adorn the shop, including wigs, sunglasses, bow ties, suspenders, and other touches. It's a one stop shop for creatives who love piecing together unique getups, and new items will be added weekly. Follow 1 Look Vintage on Facebook and Instagram for their "Outfit of the Day," which will feature daily costume ideas throughout October. And don't forget about "20% Off Wednesdays."

1 Look Vintage is located at 217 5th Street in Huntington Beach, 714-960-7771. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, closed Sunday.

Sparrow's Nest Consignment (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

New vintage and modern pieces fly into The Nest daily, and mama birds Tammy Sparrow and Lindsey Palmer are always happy to tweet about their collection. While this boutique does not stock attire, its displays are loaded with accessories. The Nest is the perfect place to, as Sparrow says, "finish your look." Beaded purses for flappers, jewelry of every style and age, vintage hats and scarves, gloves, and other accents await your vision. There are also a few seasonal home decor gems up for grabs.

Sparrow's Nest Consignment is located at 7451 Warner Avenue, Suite I, in Huntington Beach, 714-975-3548. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

Gramma's Attic Antiques & Treasures (Photos courtesy of shop)

Just as its name implies, Gramma's Attic is full of wonders, or, as owner Lisa Verrastro says, "Great stuff for great imaginations!" It's the perfect spot to piece together a truly unique look. You'll find vintage clothing and accessories here, from military uniforms to jewelry, purses, hats, and gloves. Also in stock: very creepy dolls.

Gramma's Attic Antiques & Treasures is located at 16562 Gothard Street, C, in Huntington Beach,  714-847-2662. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday.

American Vintage (Photo courtesy of shop)

As with all vintage shops, American Vintage collects an assortment of pieces for shoppers to get creative with. This year they're stocking wall to wall vintage costumes, accessories, contact lenses, wigs, and more. Their downtown Huntington Beach location makes for a convenient browsing escapade.

American Vintage is located at 201 Main Street, #C, in Huntington Beach, 714-969-9670. Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Absolutely Fabulous (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

We'd be remiss if we called this gift and accessory store anything but absolutely fabulous. To start, Riley, a shaggy terrier mix, roams the store daily, keeping solo shoppers company. You will likely pay a little more here for unique items that cannot be found anywhere else around town. Halloween decor includes rustic seasonal characters, Halloween trees, candles, various streamers, creepy displays, and spooky ornaments. Masquerade masks line the walls and shelves here, as do witch hats, feather boas, playful Halloween aprons, Dia De Los Muertos skulls, and festive pieces you can wear to the office, like a crystal spider pin or a spider web poncho. This is absolutely the go-to spot for baby Halloween accessories too. Adorable bibs, booties, and barrettes adorned with pumpkins and ghosts can be found in the tiny tots section, along with "My First Halloween" onesies. The store won a Retailer Excellence Award by Gifts and Decorative Accessories in 2013 for visual merchandising, so a visit solely to experience its mesmerizing window displays is absolutely worth it. Check in on Facebook or Yelp for 10 percent off your purchase.

Absolutely Fabulous is located at 6026 Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, 714-842-1608. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Sputnik's Pop-Up Costume Shop (Flyer courtesy of shop)

As if Johnny's Saloon couldn't get any cooler, it has, and it's upping its rad factor by opening a pop-up costume shop this season in collaboration with Sputnik's Curiosities in Orange. The shop will feature high-quality, one-of-a-kind, vintage costumes, with new items joining the collection weekly. It's open for business every Saturday leading up to Halloween, plus the Friday before it.

Sputnik's Pop-Up Costume Shop is located at 17428 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach. Hours are 7 p.m. to midnight on the following Saturdays: October 10, 17, and 24, plus Friday, October 30.

A New Day Thrift Store (Photo courtesy of A New Day Thrift Store)

Thrifty shoppers who don't mind a little digging may want to start their costume search at a thrift store, then fill in the missing pieces from the pricier shops. This family-run, resale thrift store is full of gems; it just takes a devoted shopper to comb through the racks. The shop is not currently stocking any special Halloween items, but somewhere in the colorful rows of clothing, footwear, and accessories, you'll likely find exactly what you're hunting—with a little imagination. It's our favorite thrift store in town.

A New Day Thrift Store is located at 15481 Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach, 714-494-6391. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Goodwill (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

Goodwill's "build-a-scare" Halloween section features decor, accessories, makeup, and costumes. Dia De Los Muertos and masquerade masks, wigs, tights, hats, bow ties, pattern dresses, animal prints, fake tattoos, footwear—it's all here at low prices, folks. Costumes for all ages are available, and various pieces that lend themselves to the season have been plucked from the store racks and moved into Halloween territory. Plus, there's a whole store full of possibilities.

Goodwill Classic Closet is located at 18631 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach, 714-274-0120. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. A second Goodwill can be found at 9079 Adams Avenue in Huntington Beach, 714-963-4997.

Salvation Army (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

HB's Salvation Army typically beats Goodwill Classic Closet in terms of size with more racks and rows of apparel, footwear, and props. Their Halloween section comes complete with a variety of costume pieces and accessories for all ages, as well as a few packaged complete looks. You'll likely find that random prop on your list with a bit of digging.

The Salvation Army is located at 17362 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach, 714-841-2896. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed on Sunday.

Halloween Club (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

Halloween Club's convenient Main Street location will not return this year, but the Westminster store is close enough. The early bird deal—20% off any two or more costumes through October 9—makes this seasonal pop-up shop a strong contender for your Halloween shopping list. If you're sticking to a budget, we recommend heading here once you've scoured the thrift and discount stores. Truly a one stop shop for Halloween costumes and decor, the store stocks every type of costume for every age. A gang of horrifying life-size ghouls routinely greets visitors near the entrance, and are also available to take home to disturb your neighborhood.

Halloween Club is located at 524 Westminster Mall in Westminster, 714-702-4669. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and extend to 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily starting October 9.

Passion City (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

Halloween gives celebrators the excuse to wear as little as possible one day out of the year, and Passion City has just about every skimpy getup imaginable. From a slutty bumble bee to a risqué mermaid to a naughty fireman, this adult store has ladies and gents (barely) covered. Several packaged costumes are marked up to 70% off, and we spied solid collections of tutus, furry leg warmers, bustiers, and stripper footwear.

Passion City is located at 17831 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach, 714-596-4060. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

ConRev (Photo by Lauren Lloyd)

Located a stone's throw from Passion City, this erotic gift shop carries a more refined selection of racy ensembles, and they promise an impressive "build your own" selection with promotional deals this year. A provocative policewoman, superhero, flapper, pirate, cowgirl, army soldier, and gangster are just a few of the suggestive options, plus packaged costumes for the risqué   mechanic, German beer girl, race car driver, maid, and bunny make it extra easy to slip into something sexy and celebratory. Slinky lingerie in just about any color and material can be found here, as can gorgeous bustiers, furry leg warmers, furry handcuffs, tutus and feather boas—rounding out the "build your own" option.

ConRev is located at 17855 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach, 714-843-6911. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
