There's a new brewery in town, and its mission is to not only pour quality craft beer, but to school imbibers in the art of brewing. On Saturday, November 2, Beach City Brewery opened its work in progress warehouse to the public to watch and learn from five BrewCommune brewing gangs in "Learn to Home Brew Day." During the five-hour educational event, the new watering hole also revealed the tentative names for its four flagship brews. It also called on the local community for input.
The smell and heat of boiling hops filled the space as brewhounds crowded around brewing systems ranging from basic barrels to sophisticated, technical setups supervised by computers. Years of experience among the brewers ranged from around two to 10 years, and only one gent admitted to dabbling in seasonal brews. BrewCommune members brewed pale ales, a steam beer and a coffee porter as they chatted with curious bystanders. Some of the more seasoned and invested brewers urged attendees not to be intimidated by their systems, noting that a basic home brewing system can be assembled for as little as $70.
Along with the encouraging price point for novices, brewers also recommended four tips when starting out: join a club, partner with an experienced home brewer and keep it simple and sanitary. Got it? Good. Now start brewing!
Other groups supporting the event included GD Bro Truck and its ooey, gooey burgers; OC PopQuiz, who worked guests' brains with some hardly trivial questions; 18/8 Fine Men's Salon; HB artist Michael Latham; and Orange County Coastkeeper. Beach City Brewery will be partnering with the clean water advocates on various sponsorships, including monthly beach cleanups and CleanWaterFest 2014. The two beer-loving groups also plan to collaborate on a special OC Coastkeeper brew, sales of which will partially benefit the nonprofit. We donated a few items from our marketplace to the cause as well.
One of the biggest announcements came in the form of four pieces of paper taped to the warehouse wall which revealed the styles and tentative names of Beach City Brewery's opening beers. The brews are as follows: Huntington Beach Hefeweizen, Sweet Crude Stout, Pacific City IPA and PCH Pale Ale.
Here's where you come in, HB. The brewery, which is slated to open in mid-January, would love your feedback on the names, so speak up in the comments section below. Which names do you love? Which names would you like to see fall off the pier? What do you think they should name their brews? We'll report back to Beach City Brewery with your ideas. Cheers!
