We love a good sidewalk sale. Who doesn't? When we heard Sparrow's Nest Consignment tweeting about their upcoming retail affair, we hopped over to chat with owner Tammy Sparrow about who, what, when, where and why.
"I do it for a lot of different reasons," says Sparrow of her semi-annual community-oriented sidewalk sale, which has brought eclectic goods to Huntington Beach for the past two years. The North Carolina-native told us, in her faint southern drawl, that she hosts the "mini flea market" to gain exposure for not only her own kitschy shop, but those of other local small business owners. It's also a heck of a lot of fun.
The fall sale takes place Sunday, October 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 13 different consigners, designers and locals lacking space for a yard sale will set up shop along the sidewalk in front of Sparrow's Nest, offering vintage and modern items from jewelry to furniture to housewares to handbags. Sellers include a friend of Sparrow's who specializes in new, vintage and estate furniture, as well as Cindy Cooley of Serendipity Treasures, an Etsy shop featuring costume and vintage jewelry. Be sure to stock your wallet, as the sale is cash only. A food truck might even roll up during the event.
Sparrow's Nest will also welcome shoppers inside the store to peruse its fabulous vintage collection during the sale, with 10 to 50 percent off every item. Here you'll find countless unique gems—old and young—like antiques, vintage wall clocks, seasonal fall decor, vintage pine trunks and brand new flirty retro dresses. Sparrow's background in retail, merchandising and interior design shines in her floor displays and friendly interactions with customers.
Never quite sure what will be landing in or flying from her Nest each day, Sparrow loves her 'hood and has built the perfect treasure chest for HB.
